Responsible Gambling and Self-Exclusion in Ghana

Betting is entertainment, not income or an investment. Every stake can be lost. The Gaming Commission of Ghana has publicly highlighted self-exclusion, age verification, betting limits and the need not to chase losses or borrow to gamble.

Warning signs

Take action when gambling starts to involve:

  • borrowing, selling possessions or using money for essentials;
  • trying to win back losses with larger or repeated bets;
  • hiding activity from family or missing work, school or responsibilities;
  • anxiety, sleep disruption, anger or distress linked to results;
  • repeated failed attempts to stop;
  • installing predictors or paying recovery schemes after losses.

You do not need to wait for every sign. Difficulty following your own limit is enough reason to pause.

Immediate protective steps

  1. Stop deposits and remove saved payment methods where possible.
  2. Use the operator’s deposit, loss, wager and session limits. Set them downward before the next session, not during a loss.
  3. Request time-out or self-exclusion through every operator account you use.
  4. Ask the operator in writing what the exclusion covers, how long it lasts and whether marketing will stop.
  5. Block gambling transactions or sites using tools available from your bank, mobile provider, device or network.
  6. Tell a trusted person and make essential money harder to access impulsively.

Do not open a new account to bypass an exclusion. If an operator allows access despite an active exclusion, preserve the dates and evidence.

Contacting the Gaming Commission

The Commission reports that it handles self-exclusion requests and promotes operator safeguards. Use the current contact route on the GCG website and state the operators, account identifiers and exclusion requested. Send only the personal information the Commission actually requires through its official channel.

For an operator dispute, follow the separate GCG complaint guide.

A simple limit plan

Write down a monthly entertainment amount that remains affordable if entirely lost. Divide it into sessions; never top it up from rent, food, transport, school, medical or debt money. Add a fixed end time and a rule that no new deposit is made on the same day as a loss.

Odds calculators and bankroll labels do not remove gambling risk. There is no staking system that guarantees profit.

Supporting someone else

Focus on safety and practical boundaries rather than blame. Do not lend money for another bet or pay an unverified “account recovery” service. Encourage the person to self-exclude, contact official support and seek qualified mental-health help. If someone may harm themselves or another person, contact local emergency services immediately and stay with them if it is safe to do so.

Under 18

People under 18 must not gamble in Ghana. Do not lend an account, identity document, SIM or wallet to a minor. Operators should verify age and identity.
